He said, "So I probably should've come clean about this earlier, but um… I um. Peter spoke in hushed tones, so that no one (other than the sound guy still wearing headphones) could hear. And I said, "Peter, I think you need to tell the director that you don't have a driver's license." Wasn't it obvious? We were making a driver safety video. It was such a big crash that people emerged from all the buildings looking at us like, what could you possibly be doing? In a driver's safety video paid for by the government.Įverybody froze. Peter wove through the zombies at a frenetic pace, accelerated toward the building and slammed on the brakes.Īnd the tires squealed - as did our voices - as Peter crashed the government truck through the government building. Personal Essay There's a mammal in our bathroom. We were going so slow, it was ridiculous. So for the first few takes, Peter played it really, really safe. The director ambled up to our window and said, "Okay, so for this final shot, I'm going to direct all of our extras to mill about in the parking lot and Peter, if you could just weave the truck through them going as fast as you're comfortable with and then bring the truck to a screeching stop just short of that building over there? We'll have the shot we need." For the first few takes, we were going so slow it was ridiculous. We were waiting for instructions.Īnd that's when 40 extras showed up in zombie makeup. Nonetheless, we managed to get all the shots we needed, and it was time for the final big shot before we wrap. The fact is, there were so many other things happening around us - makeup touch-ups, lav-mic rejiggerings, director notes - that in our loosy-goosy takes and riffs, we failed to realize that we had inadvertantly established Peter's character as the driver. You may find yourself wondering how, exactly, did Peter and I get to a place where, of the two of us, the one without the driver's license was the driver in this scenario? And that this was in fact the first time in his life that he had even been on the driver's side of a vehicle. (Submitted by Sam Mullins)Īnd here's the thing: Of everyone on the shoot, I am the only person who knew that Peter, the person driving the vehicle in the driver safety video. You can watch the video for yourself, but it plays out like this: As my character and his co-workers try to escape from the George Romero-style zombies running from building to building with the undead in hot pursuit, we are confronted with opportunity after opportunity to be safe while operating government vehicles. I read the script and learned that the film that I had been discovered for was a - wait for it - zombie-themed driver safety video, paid for by the municipal government of Metro Vancouver, for internal use only. But at the time, I was living in the dankest of dank basement apartments and slinging waffles in a breakfast joint. After I told a story one night, this guy came up to me and told me that I would be perfect for the lead role of a film he's working on. It all started outside a bar in downtown Vancouver that hosted a regular storytelling night. If only my brain had been devoured by zombies, a fate that befell most of my co-stars. But in my case, the gig I took as a broke twentysomething is simply impossible to forget. So if you're looking for a new zombie flick to watch, we have some picks for you–here are the 40 best zombie movies of all time.At some point, we've all had jobs we'd rather not look back on. That's right, behind the gory, bloodthirsty tales we can't get enough of is proof that the human spirit just might be able to survive anything–even the undead. "Even if as a society we have lost a lot of our belief in a positive future and instead have more of an idea of a disaster to come, we still think that we are survivors, we still want to believe that we would survive." They're unfeeling, and that's maybe the scariest thing of all.Īnd while the coronavirus pandemic has led many people to reach for happier, lighter movies to watch, there's also a good reason why you're reaching for your favorite post-apocalyptic flick: "There is this glimmer of hope that I am really interested in," Vidergar explains. You see that in the obsession in apocalypse and disaster in the fictional stories we tell." Plus, zombies are just plainly scary. In a way, survivalism has become a dominant mode of self-reference for a greater number of people. But if you're wondering just why people find zombie movies so fascinating, Stanford literary scholar Angela Becerra Vidergar once explained that, "We use fictional narratives not only to emotionally cope with the possibility of impending doom, but even more importantly perhaps to work through the ethical and philosophical frameworks that were in many ways left shattered in the wake of WWII. There's nothing quite like witnessing a crowd of ravenous, flesh-hungry creatures to brighten your day.

Transfer to a plate and let rest 5 minutes. Cook until well browned but still rosy near the bone, 4 to 5 minutes per side for bone-in pork chops that are 8 ounces each. When the oil begins to shimmer, add the pork chops to the pan, making sure there is an inch between each, so they sear and don’t steam from overcrowding. Add olive oil or neutral oil to the hot skillet. Heat a heavy skillet like cast iron or stainless steel over medium-high heat. Season them all over with salt and pepper or salt and pepper mixed with a blend of spices. If you choose thin, bone-in chops, they will cook in just the amount of time it takes to brown them. If you cook them entirely on the stove, they'll be dry, so finish them in the oven until they reach 145 degrees F. Thick chops may take longer to cook than to brown. A note about the thickness of your pork chops. Choose bone-in or boneless loin pork chops. Let the pork chops rest covered for about 5 minutes after cooking to let the juices retreat back into the meat.I use a simple dry rub consisting of garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper. Season generously with salt and other seasonings. If it’s not done, then put it back in the oven, and cook it for another 5-10 minutes. After that, check to see if the pork chop is done. Then, put the pan that you’re going to cook the pork chop in, and put it in the oven for approximately 25 minutes. A quick 30 minutes brine makes a big difference. Make sure to place the rack in the middle of the oven, since this will give you better results. Just place your chops in the salt and water mixture (1/4 cup of salt + 4 cups of water). I highly recommend brining the chops before cooking.Remove the chops from the fridge 15 minutes before cooking so the meat gets closer to room temperature for more even cooking.Bone-in pork chops are more tender and flavorful than boneless cuts.Thicker pork chops that are 1-1.5 inches thick are less likely to dry out than thin chops.Look for fresh, high-quality pork chops that are plump with a nice pink color and some fat around the edges.Tips: extra steps to take the tenderness to a new level It’s OK if the meat appears slightly pink as long as the temperature reaches the desired level, since temperature (not color) is the safe indicator of pork doneness according to the USDA. Your pork chops will be overcooked by then. One of the biggest mistakes people make is to cook the meat until it’s completely white. The temperature will rise a few degrees more during resting to reach the final internal temperature of 145☏ (63☌), As soon as the temperature reads 140☏ (61☌), remove the pork chops to a plate to rest. Insert the probe into the thickest part of the chop (about an inch away from the bone for bone-in chops). The most reliable way is by using an instant-read thermometer. When are pork chops done frying?Ĭook time and color are NOT accurate ways to measure doneness. As kitchen equipment may vary in the amount of heat produced, it’s best to verify doneness using a thermometer instead of relying on time alone. Note: Times above are for room temperature chops. Simply follow the cook time chart below for the chops you’re using: Thickness So knowing how long to cook your chops and when to remove from heat are the most important keys to avoiding dry-out pork chops!Ĭooking times vary for thin vs. Did you know the temperature of your pork chops keeps rising even after they’re removed from the heat, a phenomenon called carryover cooking. Even just a few minutes too long on the stovetop will make them tough and chewy. Pork chops cook quickly and are prone to overcooking. This way, you’ll get more evenly cooked meat with a nice and golden brown crust. It might sound counterintuitive, but our experiments prove that extra flipping is the secret to tender and juicy pork chops!įlipping every minute prevents the exterior of your pork chops from overcooking or burning while you’re waiting for the interior to cook through. Remove the pork chops to a plate to rest for 5 minutes before serving.įlipping multiple times in the skillet for the best results.

William Blair & Company served as exclusive financial advisor to Bessemer Venture Partners on the investment.īeyond Pricing is the leading dynamic pricing solution for the short term rental industry. "As soon as we started using Beyond Pricing, the tides began to shift and we ultimately were able to increase our overall revenue by over 20%, while staying competitive with the bigger players in the market." We had been looking for opportunities to increase revenue for our owners and when a large national manager recently entered our market we saw we needed to find the tools to help us remain competitive right away," said Fred Cercena from GetAway Vacations in Killington, VT. "Our company has been managing vacation rentals in Killington, Vermont for over 10 years. We're excited about partnering with them in the next chapter of the company's growth," said Brian Feinstein, Partner at Bessemer Venture Partners. We were impressed with the Beyond Pricing team's ability to consistently deliver revenue growth for their customers and think they are positioned to become the market leader in short term rental software. While hotels have fully embraced technology and dynamic pricing, the short term rental industry is still underpenetrated. "At Bessemer, we love investing in founders that are transforming industries that have been historically underserved by software. The company also plans to expand its presence in Europe, starting with their office in Portugal. The company, which last raised post-seed funding in 2016, plans to use the infusion of capital to maintain their leadership in the space and develop an expanded suite of products to further support their core customer base. This funding will allow us to deepen our relationship with our customers, and offer new tools to help them maintain and grow their businesses."īeyond Pricing currently dynamically prices 150,000+ listings in more than 7,000 cities worldwide, and has priced more than $2 billion in bookings. "Our mission is to put the power back in the hands of these customers and help them maximize both revenue and occupancy while maintaining a competitive edge as this industry continues to mature. We were the first company to create software specifically designed for the needs of these customers, giving them access to industry-leading technology for the first time," said Beyond Pricing co-founder & CEO Ian McHenry. "Our customers make up the majority of the short term rental industry, but don't have the resources to invest in their own software, and have traditionally relied on analog ways of pricing their properties. Using Beyond Pricing, these customers are able to competitively price their properties, regardless of the platform they list on, and see up to a 40% increase in revenue. While these customers manage a majority of the short term rentals on the market, they are underserved by the growing proptech industry, and are increasingly fighting off competition in the form of VC-backed vacation rental platforms and hospitality conglomerates that are entering the fast-growing space.īeyond Pricing gives these customers access to tools previously only available to large hospitality companies, and leverages over 10 billion proprietary data points to make the most accurate pricing recommendations in the industry. 26, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ - Today Beyond Pricing, the leading dynamic pricing solution for the fast-growing short term rental industry, announced it had raised $42.5 million in Series A funding led by Bessemer Venture Partners.īeyond Pricing's automated dynamic pricing software - the first of its kind in the industry - was created to empower independent property owners, managers and developers. How do you play when you’re no longer able to use the overhead view to further plan your actions? Is the baseball bat now a more viable weapon to use because of the game’s low gravity? How do you protect the VIP worm, knowing his demise means your team loses? Having alterations to the match formula isn’t something worms veterans will be unfamiliar with, but the Wormpot allows that process to become more randomised than considered, though if you disagree with the set-up you can spin again or change them individually. This is a slot machine which, upon activation, comes up with three alterations to the standard match set-up and adds another element of strategy. It makes for a great touch and it means that there are so many more combinations of environments the player can have on top of the standard maps available, and if those don’t tickle your fancy you can create your own landscapes.Ĭustomisation doesn’t end there, because on top of the randomly generated terrain available there’s also something called the “Wormpot”. On top of the massive amount of maps the player can unlock through natural progression, those which have a more generic theme can be randomised and come with a code that can be noted if you want to use that exact arena again. One brilliant thing about the game is just how customisable your versus experiences can be. There’s still a lot of strategy to be had in employing the landscape to your advantage, and on some maps it’s even more important than before if you want to get to the end of the battle with all your worms left alive. Those expecting to be able to employ defensive tactics like drilling into the environment and blocking the entrance with girders (not that I’d encourage that behaviour… against me) may find themselves having to reassess tactics, as the pneumatic drills and blowtorches are gone, allowing for more dynamic and offensive matches. It also gives the game a rather brilliant graphical style that hasn’t noticeably aged since since the games were originally released. Worms: Ultimate Mayhem still has destructible environments, as the levels are created with something Team17 termed “poxels” – essentially a hybrid of polygons and voxels which allow the environments to be deformed in the same manner as the two dimensional games. It’s something I had to check out, and you’ll find that it does well to ease you in and make you feel more adept at handling everything in a 3D environment, though no longer being on a 2D plane does change the game more than you’d think. Jumping into worm-related carnage in the third dimension is something some players may not be familiar with, and to help alleviate any potential issues the game opens with a narrator and a film encouraging you to check out the tutorials and visit the options menu to customise some worms. Your worms are now silhouetted when behind objects, there’s a picture in picture view showing the path of your projectiles, Binoculars and aim assists now exist to help slowly accustom players to the new dimension, and there’s now a narrator who introduces the story missions and challenges from Worms 4: Mayhem. Rather than call it a day at that though, Team17 dove back in and fixed several problems that plagued the originals to bring a more refined experience. My first exposure to Worms came in the form of the World Party entry on the PSOne – a game which has still routinely been fired up by my friends and me over the years when in need of a pick up and play party game.Īvailable for the PC, PSN and XBLA, Worms Ultimate Mayhem isn’t strictly a new title rather, it’s a ‘best of’ compilation of Worms 3D and Worms 4, packaged into a single download. Weirder still, it ended up becoming one of the best known and most loved turn based strategy franchises around. You know what’s weird? One day, a guy called Andy Davidson decided that he was going to make a game about some small pink worms who’d kill each other with Bazookas, explosive sheep, old ladies and grenades straight out of Monty Python films. They also found that co-culture with bovine smooth muscle cells and tri-culture with bovine endothelial cells – cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels – created an enhanced meat-like texture.Īccording to volunteers who tested the product after cooking, its taste, aroma and texture were typical of real meat. Researchers found that bovine satellite cells, which are “seeded” within the textured soy protein scaffolds where they multiply and create tissue, covered a large portion of the scaffolds.
